I love quotes that add meaning to my life. Here are a few to live by:

How should I eat? (Not too much)
—Michael Pollan

If it is so difficult to learn to cook, how did all those early pioneer women manage to cross the country in rugged covered wagons and feed troops of people from one big pot hung over an open fire?
—Marion Cunningham, from Learning to Cook

Treat treats as treats.
—Michael Pollan

No matter how you slice it through, grain-fed meat production systems are a drain on the global food supply.

Video of Bronwyn Dunne & Judith Jones Preparing Potato Salads at BrynTeg

My friend, Burlington resident and “copy editor to the stars,” Janet Biehl shot the latest video of my stepmother, Judith, and me in early September, 2012. It was the end of a very hot summer here in Vermont, Judith and I had been talking about how delicious warm potato salad is and suddenly it became an idea for a video. We were both looking at the prospect of winding down the summer and closing up the house on Stannard Mountain, a yearly ritual. It was to be our last summer food fling!

Thank goodness our videographer was willing to brave the heat and then stand around while we boiled potatoes and eggs, as she waited for the right moment for shooting.  What were we thinking? But, on the other hand, the sultry weather in September only reminded me of the much more arduous and time-consuming jobs women did in un-air conditioned kitchens sixty-years ago. My grandmother would have been proud of us!

I hope you enjoy the video. It shows that a simple dish, potato salad, can have many disguises. Inspired, you may think of other ways to make the dish your own family treasure. A little celery, a pinch of cayenne, some chopped basil and the recipe is yours!

My friend, Burlington resident and “copy editor to the stars," Janet Biehl shot the latest video of my stepmother, Judith, and me in early September, 2012.

My grandmother would have been proud of us!

I hope you enjoy the video. It shows that a simple dish, potato salad, can have many disguises. Inspired, you may think of other ways to make the dish your own family treasure. A little celery, a pinch of cayenne, some chopped basil and the recipe is yours!

I’m not waiting till summer to act on potato salad two ways! Charming and helpful. Thank you J,J and B!

Thanks so much to both Judith and Jennifer et al. I so happy we were able to shoot last September. A very nice memory….

This blog site is incredible. The information a bit over this novice’s head but I am a quick study. What I like is this blog doesn’t just celebrate good cooking and eating but friends, Burlington and the State of Vermont. An awareness of time and place that most blog sites don’t have. Living in the city the potato salad I eat is deli, is the warm potato salad you refer to on this blog site different?

  6. Bronwyn says:

Thank you, Will, for your very kind words about the blog and your question about the potato salad. The warm potato salad is different from the deli version in two respects -I don’t think the deli is using white wine and I’m sure you’re not buying it when it’s warm. If the deli-version you buy doesn’t have mayonnaise in it, I guess it could be considered a cousin, but, a very distant one….( – :

……. ” the wood picks up the morning light

the heck with the potato salads….. lets
    talk light and air…….

    well…… a little salad wouldn’t hurt….. !!

    • My other favorite subject -light and air! Very important when you’re in the kitchen….I remember a kitchen in St. Tropez with one large kitchen table, a tiny four-burner gas stove, two wooden spoons, a large and small knife, one large bowl and two cooking pots -and a view out the window across a vineyard. Food never tasted better then in that light-filled kitchen!

  8. Will Bailey says:

Last time I checked this one out the video wasn’t working so my comments were about the overall blog site. This time I got to see Bronwyn and Judith in action. Several reactions: 1. Seeing Judith tasting it as you went along delighted me 2. I had no idea radishes open up in cold water 3. Radishes and lettuce make a great presentation 4. Bronwyn referring to it as “Midwestern potato salad, mayonnaise (e)” how fun.
    5. Yes, it’s comfort food but shouldn’t most food give one a sense of well-being?
Hey, great video with two great cooks.
