I love quotes that add meaning to my life. Here are a few to live by:

How should I eat? (Not too much)
—Michael Pollan

If it is so difficult to learn to cook, how did all those early pioneer women manage to cross the country in rugged covered wagons and feed troops of people from one big pot hung over an open fire?
—Marion Cunningham, from Learning to Cook

Treat treats as treats.
—Michael Pollan

No matter how you slice it through, grain-fed meat production systems are a drain on the global food supply.
—Jonathan A. Foley, director of the Institute on the Environment, U of MN

I think the best thing about Burlington is that it's a close and supportive community, so when Best of Burlington, our monthly life and culture magazine, asked me to be the food personality for the holiday issue, I couldn’t say “no." The fact that I’d been recommended by my dance teacher and friend, Lucille Dwyer, made it all the more a compliment. Friends can surprise you in wonderful ways!

The Interview
My interview was on a beautiful 78-degree day in September, not the sort of weather to inspire thoughts of holiday seasonal recipes, but with the help of Jen Smith, freelance writer and director of The Nomadic Oven; and the photographer, Brent Harrewyn, thoughts of family holiday get-togethers flooded into my mind.

The Recipes
As you will read in the article, In the Kitchen with Bronwyn: Tips for Holiday Entertaining (click for a pdf version), the recipes are a combination of the old and the new, my beloved baked brie in phyllo, a mainstay of festive parties in the 80s and 90s, and the more recently acquired taste for middle-eastern and Italian dishes like the featured pesto sauce—my daughter Alex’s version—and a super red pepper and walnut spread from South Burlington Community Library director, Louise Murphy.

Enjoy!

A bientot,

I became interested in the Vermont Foodbank when I first moved from the District of Columbia to South Burlington. Unlike the food distribution organizations in other places I’ve lived, the Vermont Foodbank treats feeding people as a privilege, not just a responsibility.

[caption id="attachment_1142" align="alignleft" width="240"] Kingsbury Farm’s strawberry high tunnel bustling with bees in early spring[/caption]

Two years ago, under the energetic directorship of John Sayles, the organization branched out to become farmers in addition to distributors and fundraisers because John and his staff realized the necessity for more fresh fruit and vegetables in their program. Now, with the crops produced on the Kingsbury Farm in Waitsfield, Vermont, in the Mad River Valley, the organization can be proud of the fresh produce they provide.

I feel very grateful that I can help support the food distribution program provided by the Vermont Foodbank and hope you will join me in helping them continue the work they do, providing healthy food to those who are struggling to maintain a hunger-free existence. Watch this YouTube video about the Foodbank's Kingsbury Farm, a short film produced by Middlebury College’s “Farm Stories.”

My friend, Laurie Burke, a contributor to Shelburne News, and I were recently traveling home from the Northeast Kingdom when I realized she'd never paid a visit to Bread & Butter Farm in Shelburne, Vermont, one of my favorite local sources of farm produce and makers of the best bread in Vermont. When we stopped, she realized she had a photo opportunity for her article on local food. I was happy to be the "poster girl" for farm fresh produce!

keep up the great work, the hungry are very grateful.

    • Bronwyn says:

Thank you for your support. I’m excited that we have 21 new subscribers since early February’s pledge to give to the Vermont Foodbank and a whole month to add more!

  2. Last night 8 more subscriptions came into the blog. You guys are all great! Many, many thanks!!

  3. Bronwyn says:

The final number of people who subscribed between Feb. 14th and March 31st was 48. Our goal was 50 so that wasn’t bad! I’m looking forward to running this challenge to ITKWB viewers later in the summer. I look forward to an ongoing pledge we will keep to help the Vermont Foodbank feed more people who are struggling to feed themselves. Thank you, everyone!

I think the best thing about Burlington is that it’s a close and supportive community, so when Best of Burlington, our monthly life and culture magazine, asked me to be the food personality for the holiday issue, I couldn’t say “no.” The fact that I’d been recommended by my dance teacher and friend, Lucille Dwyer, made it all the more a compliment.

Enjoy!

For each new subscription to my blog from now through December 25, In the Kitchen with Bronwyn will donate $2 to the Vermont Foodbank. Two dollars will provide 12 holiday meals to our Vermont neighbors in need.

Bronwyn, I just read the Best of Burlington piece and really enjoyed it, especially having tasted most of those special recipes quite recently! The photos are inspiring and beautifully done. Hope you’ve had a tasty holiday!

Now I have a lot of turkey meat leftover and it makes me think of Evan and Judith and their “made” dishes. Any suggestions???

    • Hi Kathleen,

Thank you. I thnk the magazine did a great job, and I’m indebted to Jen Smith who wrote the aricle and Brent Harrewyn, the photographer. Would love to work with them, again, anytime!

Turkey hash was one of my father’s favorites…I’ll take a look in American Food and see if there’s a recipe…..and get back to you.

  2. Thanks so much Bronwyn for the nice words. You make it so easy with what you do. Let us know when the brie is ready!!! 🙂

  3. Bronwyn says:

So nice to know that the recipe works for you…..it’s pretty fullproof, as long as you use enough melted butter. Delicious!

SUBSCRIBE TO MY BLOG BY DECEMBER 25 TO BENEFIT THE VERMONT FOODBANK!

I became interested in the Vermont Foodbank when I first moved from the District of Columbia to South Burlington. Unlike the food distribution organizations in other places I’ve lived, the Vermont Foodbank treats feeding people as a privilege, not just a responsibility.

Kingsbury Farm’s strawberry high tunnel bustling with bees in early spring

Watch this YouTube video about the Foodbank’s Kingsbury Farm, a short film produced by Middlebury College’s “Farm Stories.”

For each new subscription to my blog from now through December 25, In the Kitchen with Bronwyn will donate $2 to the Vermont Foodbank. Two dollars will provide 12 holiday meals to our Vermont neighbors in need.

Enjoy!

A bientot,

My friend, Laurie Burke, a contributor to Shelburne News, and I were recently traveling home from the Northeast Kingdom when I realized she'd never paid a visit to Bread & Butter Farm in Shelburne, Vermont, one of my favorite local sources of farm produce and makers of the best bread in Vermont. When we stopped, she realized she had a photo opportunity for her article on local food. I was happy to be the "poster girl" for farm fresh produce!

For each new subscription to my blog from now through December 25, In the Kitchen with Bronwyn will donate $2 to the Vermont Foodbank. Two dollars will provide 12 holiday meals to our Vermont neighbors in need.

Poster Girl for Local Food!

My friend, Laurie Burke, a contributor to Shelburne News, and I were recently traveling home from the Northeast Kingdom when I realized she’d never paid a visit to Bread & Butter Farm in Shelburne, Vermont, one of my favorite local sources of farm produce and makers of the best bread in Vermont. When we stopped, she realized she had a photo opportunity for her article on local food. I was happy to be the “poster girl” for farm fresh produce!

For each new subscription to my blog from now through December 25, In the Kitchen with Bronwyn will donate $2 to the Vermont Foodbank. Two dollars will provide 12 holiday meals to our Vermont neighbors in need.
